Celebrating Earth Day at Home

April 22nd is Earth Day!

This year is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and we have compiled a list of activities to help you  celebrate. With the growing concern about spreading the COVID-19 virus and social distancing in place for many of us this April, we have made sure that these activities are safe for your families. Social distancing doesn’t mean that you can’t go outside and enjoy nature, as long as you do so responsibly.

Let’s celebrate Earth Day by appreciating and respecting the natural world. Here are some ideas to inspire you, the Montessori way- using your senses, natural materials, spending time outdoors, following the child, caring for the environment, caring for animals, and learning real life skills!

Spend time outside in your yard or garden. Let your surroundings ignite your senses:

  • Listen for the sounds of nature. What do you hear? Birds singing, leaves blowing in the breeze, dogs barking… are they loud or quiet?

  • Look around you. What plants or animals do you see? What colors are they?

  • Take a deep breath. What do you smell? Flowers blooming, fresh air?

  • Feel the nature around you. Are rocks hard or soft? Are branches rough or smooth?

Repurpose materials from around your house into new items; make jewelry, bags or plant holders. Try an easy no-sew t-shirt tote or produce bag!

Gather nature items from outside, like leaves and pinecones, and make an art project out of them. What animals can you create out of the things you find?

Paint stones or decorate sticks by wrapping colored yard around them. These are great activities for building fine motor skills.

Watch an environmental documentary or animal show and learn about ways to protect your favorite animals. Here are some of the best ones for children:

Plant seedlings in little jars and put them on your windowsill. Here are 8 easy plants kids can grow from seeds:

Regrow veggies from kitchen scraps! Many vegetables and herbs from the grocery store will regrow easily in water or in soil:
