Event Name Auction 185 – “High Quality Ancient Coins”
Event Description Monday, March 8th, starts with auction 185 “High Quality Ancient Coins”. 329 lots will be presented characterized by its rarity and its outstanding preservation. Some high quality Celtic pieces are followed by the Greek coins occupying almost two thirds of the catalogue containing Classical gems such as the famous decadrachm from Syracuse from about 400 B. C. that will be offered in three varieties: first, an unsigned piece by Kimon and Euainetos, respectively, then a specimen bearing the signature of the latter (no. 38, extremely fine, estimate: 15.000 Euros; no. 39, very fine to extremely fine, estimate: 12.000 Euros and no. 40, very fine to extremely fine, estimate: 5.000 Euros).
The Macedonian Kings, especially Philipp II and Alexander the Great, are represented by a larger selection including rare mints and varieties.
A stater from Delphi is of particular historical importance since it is one of the coins minted around 336 B. C. from the temple treasure to finance the rebuilding of the Temple of Apollo after its predecessor was badly damaged in an earthquake (no. 110, very fine, estimate: 20.000 Euros).
The auction’s gem is an electrum stater, probably from the city of Ephesus, of which only four copies are known to exist, overshadowing all other coins with its estimate of 150.000 Euros: it is an example of the famous emission of Phanes with a grazing stag on its obverse specified by the legend as the badge of Phanes (no. 146, very fine).
The other highlights of this auction should not be omitted here such as the exquisite selection of Ptolemaic coins including an octadrachm showing an image of Berenice (no. 202, very fine, estimate: 8.000 Euros).
The Roman Republic comes up with a great rarity, too: a denarius of Quintus Labienus from 40 B. C. (no. 229, extremely fine to brilliant uncirculated, estimate: 30.000 Euros). The high quality coins of Roman Imperial Times comprise of gold coins – including an aureus of Septimius Severus with the portrait of Julia Domna on its reverse (no. 260, brilliant uncirculated, estimate: 18.000 Euros) – a number of impressive sestertii with a marvelous patina. To name but one: a sestertius of Claudius showing a triumphal arch on its reverse, a magnificent work of extremely fine preservation (no. 238, estimate: 12.000 Euros).
