Auction 188 – Medieval and Modern Times |
| Event Description |
On Thursday and Friday, March 11th and 12th, respectively, 1746 lots from “Medieval and Modern Times” will be on offer. Apart from many extraordinary single pieces the comprehensive series deserve special mention. The sale starts with exactly 700 gold coins from all over the world. A very close look will pay off since there is many a rare piece from all five continents to be found. The coins from Old Germany follow starting with 190 coins from the Margraviate of Brandenburg. A collection will be auctioned off that was thoroughly assembled over the period of many years with an estimate of just 3.000 Euros (no. 4701). An extremely rare and magnificently preserved Bavarian Vereinskrone from 1868, in contrast, is estimated at 20.000 Euros (no. 4723, extremely fine from PR). Another rarity comes from the city of Regensburg: it is a 4 ducat piece from 1694 (no. 4899, almost brilliant uncirculated, estimate: 20.000 Euros). The different lines of Braunschweig are well represented, too, not only by taler, but by splendid löser as well. A small but fine series of Frankfurt let the connoisseur’s heart rejoice. Not to forget the roughly 70 lots from Saxony including a number of reasonably priced gems. The medal section begins with a marvelous collection of Goetz Medals including the much rarer big sizes, for example the medal from 1944 for the Allied Invasion with its diameter of almost 11 cm (no. 5266, almost extremely fine, estimate: 500 Euros). Austria-Hungary is followed by the foreign countries. Especially interesting are a small series of Bulgaria and the surprising section of France. A special collection of Franche-Comté, Burgundy and Alsace that will be offered for sale consists not only of examples of the different denominations and types, but of every year’ issues the collector could get his hands on. To present but two examples: a taler from 1575 from the city of Colmar, formerly Voltz Collection (no. 5567, very fine to extremely fine, estimate: 6.000 Euros) and a taler from the same year from the Diocese of Strasburg (no. 5576, very fine, estimate: 8.500 Euros). Last but not least the thrilling lots spread all over the catalogue, for example a lot with a special collection covering the English history, from the Celts to the Modern Times (no. 5616, approx. 170 pieces, estimate: 3.250 Euros) and a nearly complete set of Papal Medals from the 18th century (no. 5625, estimate: 12.500 Euros). The auction is concluded by a series of high quality pieces from the Islamic world with a rare gold medal of Abd Al-Majid from 1843 (no. 5578, extremely fine, estimate: 10.000 Euros) and a unique set of orders of a US-American who used to work in the Royal Mint of the Ottoman Empire (no. 5818, order good extremely fine, estimate: 20.000 Euros).
